I’m an experienced English teacher that loves discussing interpretations of texts. In this video I choose three key scenes from each major character in JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls and analyse the use of language in each one.

Romeo and Juliet lesson on the ending of the play. A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that focuses on a number of key scenes from William Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet. We look at Romeo’s soliloquy before he poisons himself, as well as Juliet’s speech as she awakens and discovers the body of Romeo next to here. Finally, we look at the very ending of the play and the truce that both the Capulets and the Montagues agree on. We analyse the use of language in these scenes and explain their impact on the audience. Definitely worth a download!

Romeo and Juliet lesson on her death and the apothecary. A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that focuses on a number of key scenes from William Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet. We look at Act 4 Scene 3 as Juliet takes the vial of liquid given to her by the Friar. Additionally, we see how Romeo reacts as Balthasar tells him the news that Juliet is dead and we look at Act 5 Scene 1 as Romeo visits the apothecary to purchase poison. We analyse the use of language in these scenes and explain their impact on the audience. Definitely worth a download!

Romeo and Juliet lesson with a focus on the Friar’s plan. A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that focuses on Act 4 Scene 1 of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as we see how Paris and Juliet meet and the plan that Friar Laurence puts together to rescue Juliet from her fate. We look at the language between Paris and Juliet, as well as deciding what Juliet should do next and how the Friar puts together his scheme to reunite Juliet with Romeo without arousing suspicions. Ideal preparation for students preparing for Literature exams and easily adaptable for younger students as well.

Romeo and Juliet lesson on after Tybalt’s death and the following events. A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that focuses on Act 3 Scene 1, Act 3 Scene 2 and Act 3 Scene 3 of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as we see how the news of Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s subsequent banishment impact on both Romeo and Juliet. We look at Benvolio’s description of the events that occured previously and why Shakespeare uses retelling events as a dramatic tool, before moving on to Juliet and then Romeo receiving the news that affects them so much. Ideal preparation for students preparing for Literature exams and easily adaptable for younger students as well.

Romeo and Juliet lesson on Tybalt. A fully differentiated lesson that looks at the key scene of Act 3 Scene 1 from Romeo and Juliet where Tybalt looks for revenge on Romeo for attending the Capulet party and what happens to Romeo and his friend Mercutio as a result. Includes differentiated activities, key quotes, key words and terms and engaging and clear resources that are very useful for students analysing the text regardless of age.

Love and Relationships lesson. A fully differentiated lesson that analyses the use of language within Climbing My Grandfather by Andrew Waterhouse. We look at how mountains can be used as metaphors for life, before focusing on the descriptions of the grandfather, Includes an analytical paragraph scaffold, differentiated activities and questions and engaging resources that will prepare KS4 students for AQA English Literature Paper 2. This lesson is also easily adaptable for KS3 students as well.

Love and Relationships lesson. A fully differentiated lesson on Singh Song by Daljit Nagra that analyses how the narrator sees himself, his wife and his relationship to his parents and how they fit into his sense of identity. Includes key words, key quotes, differentiated activities and visually engaging and interesting resources for students preparing for AQA English Literature Paper 2 at KS4, but can also be easily adapted for KS3 students as well.

A fully differentiated lesson on Before You Were Mine by Carol Ann Duffy that analyses how the narrator sees her relationship with her mother, and how she feels her mother may have changed since she was born and the mother became ‘mine’. Includes key words, key quotes, differentiated activities and visually engaging and interesting resources for students preparing for AQA English Literature Paper 2 at KS4, but can also be easily adapted for KS3 students as well.

A fully differentiated lesson on Eden Rock by Charles Causley that analyses how the narrator thinks of his parents and the imaginary or heavenly place and situation he describes within the poem Includes key words, key quotes, differentiated activities and visually engaging and interesting resources for students preparing for AQA English Literature Paper 2 at KS4, but can also be easily adapted for KS3 students as well.

AQA English Language Paper 1. A fully differentiated lesson that looks at Language Paper 1-style AQA English Language questions (around an extract from Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn), providing students with suggested ideas on the use of language and structure in the extract and how to approach Q4. It also covers Section B - narrative/descriptive writing. Easily adaptable for other exam questions and for other exam boards. I’m really proud of this one!

A fully differentiated lesson that looks at a Paper 2-style AQA English Literature unseen poetry questions (on Autumn by Alan Bold and Today by Billy Collins and reviews the presentation of Autumn and Spring in both poems and the use of language and structure in the poems before students review their own answers and then self-assess each other’s work. A fully differentiated lesson that looks at a Paper 1-style AQA English Literature question (extract and question included) on A Christmas Carol and reviews the presentation of Scrooge as unsympathetic, the use of language in the extract and how the extract can be linked to historical context before students review their own answers and then self-assess each other’s work.
